    Grasses

 Wheat Grasses
  • Alkar Tall - A very productive variety that will survive on subirrigated saline soil. It is winter hardy with early spring growth, but is not drought tolerant. Alkar is tall and late maturing with good seedling vigor.

  • Ephraim Crested - Shorter with finer foliage and earlier maturity than standard crested. Mildly rhizomatous for erosion control.

  • Fairway Crested - Shorter with finer foliage and earlier maturity than standard crested. Fairway is shorter, semi-turf type and very hardy. It offers good production at high elevation, and provides more complete ground cover than standard crested.

  • Hycrest Crested - Very long-lived and winter hardy with extensive deep fibrous root system. Produces a high forage yield early in year. Hycrest is a hybrid between standard and fairway types.

  • Nordan Crested - Very long-lived and winter hardy with extensive deep fibrous root system. More drought tolerant than Hycrest.

  • Greenleaf Pubescent - A more productive variety of pubescent. It is less drought hardy than Luna, but is more productive and is therefore better suited to the foothill areas or areas of higher rainfall.

  • Luna Pubescent - Very similar to intermediate in many ways, but more winter-hardy and more drought tolerant. It does better on drier sites than intermediate and does not have as severe a sod forming problem.

  • Mandan Pubescent - A variety for the prairie regions of the west. Produces abundant forage on deep soils with decent fertility.

  • Manska Pubescent - A selection from intermediate, more drought tolerant and winter hardy. Stays green longer if moisture is available. Better adapted to low fertility soils than intermediate. Can become sod bound, and has a low tolerance for wet conditions. Manska is the latest selection from Mandan for overall adaptability and good regrowth.

  • Oahe Intermediate - A weak sod former requiring less moisture than smooth bromegrass but more than crested. It will out produce both during the first three crop years. Productive pasture longevity is about six years. Does better if grown with a legume. Oahe is selected for high seed yield and drought tolerance.

  • Revenue Slender - Its rapid establishment provides quick ground cover during the first seedling year. It will produce will for only three to four years, making it a good choice to use in a mixture with other grasses that are slow to establish. Revenue is a variety selected for ease of establishment, good forage and seed yield.

  • Sodar Streambank - A strong sod former that is drought tolerant with excellent seedling vigor. Used for low maintenance turf and soil stabilization.

  • Western - A strong native sod grass that does well on heavy soils, and can withstand flooding and drought. It is valuable for soil revegetation and stabilization, hay and pasture.

 Brome Grasses
  • Paddock Meadow Brome - This variety is very compatible with alfalfa and has much faster regrowth after haying or grazing than smooth bromegrass. Paddock is selected for high seed production.

  • Smooth Brome - A high yielding sod former with vigorous rhizomes. Periodic chiseling and nitrogen is needed to maintain production due to sod boundness. It goes dormant under high summer temperatures, therefore regrowth after hay cutting is poor.

  • Manchar Smooth Brome - A rapid developing, long-lived, sod forming grass with excellent seedling vigor. Wide area of adaptation. Best application is for areas of heavy use or areas needing a sod-former to prevent erosion.

 Orchard Grasses
  • Latar - Probably the best orchard grass for irrigated hay mixes because it matures later, so it is green and lush at the time of hay cutting.

  • Paiute (dryland) - The most draught tolerant orchard grass. Can be used in dryland mixes in 12-18" precipitation zone.

  • Potomac - An economically priced orchard for hay or pasture mixes. Good winter-hardiness.

  • Profile - A long-lived perennial bunchgrass with an extensive fibrous root system that is highly productive and palatable. Has good regrowth after haying or grazing, but does not tolerate overgrazing. Profile has excellent winter hardiness and is resistant to strip rust. It has high forage production.

 Miscellaneous Forage Grasses
  • Annual Rye - Quick ground cover for disturbed sites. Cheap and efficient.

  • Climax Timothy - Timothy is a reasonably productive grass that is adapted to the cooler, moister areas of the west. Timothy needs moist conditions and will tolerate some flooding. It tolerates acid soils, but does not like alkalinity. Grows well at high elevations.

  • Garrison Creeping Foxtail - A long-lived perennial with dense rhizomes. Rapidly forms a dense sod and can spread as much as four feet in one year. Produces excellent yields of hay or pasture. Grows only in wet areas, and needs a constant supply of moisture. Tolerates alkaline conditions moderately well. Best growth in cool weather.

  • Fawn Tall Fescue - Long-lived perennial bunchgrass. Widely used for pasture and hay, with a wide area of adaptation. It is a cool season grass, and will eventually develop sod. Its best area of adaptation is areas of cool climate, wet and heavy soils. Does not do well on dry, sandy soils. Will tolerate ponding of water for short time, and has good salinity tolerance. This grass is tough so it is ideal for mixes for areas of heavy use.

 Rye Grasses
  • Annual Rye - Quick ground cover for disturbed sites. Cheap and efficient.

  • Bozoisky - This is a new improved variety of Russian Wild Rye. Does all the good things that Russian Wild Rye does but will produce a lot more forage when moisture and fertility are present. Has good seedling vigor.

  • Russian - Highly palatable, drought resistant bunchgrass. Vigorous competitor because of its extensive root system. Does best on well-drained fertile soils. Does not do well on heavy clay soils. Not a real good producer, but forage is extremely high quality. One of the best grasses for fall and winter grazing. Needs 10" or better precipitation.

 Pasture Mixes
  • Northern Dryland - 35% Oahe Intermediate, 30% Nordan Crested, 25% Mandan Pubescent, 10% Russian Wild Rye

  • Fairfield - 40% Potomac Orchard, 20% Fawn Tall Fescue, 20% Smooth Brome, 10% Alsike Clover, 10% Climax Timothy

  • TS Irrigated - 50% Fleet Meadow Brome, 20% Fawn Tall Fescue, 20% Potomac Orchardgrass, 5% Alsike Clover, 5% Climax Timothy

  • Horse Pasture - 30% Smooth Brome, 30% Potomac Orchard, 25% Timothy, 15% Creeping Alfalfa

 Lawn and Turf Grasses
  • Athletic Field Mix - 35% Creeping Red Fescue, 30% Kentucky Bluegrass, 30% Perennial Ryegrass, 5% Annual Ryegrass

  • Broadwater Lawn Mix - 55% Kentucky Bluegrass, 25% Perennial Ryegrass, 20% Creeping Red Fescue

  • Ephraim Crested - Mildly rhizomatous for erosion control.

  • Fairway Crested - Fairway is shorter, semi-turf type and very hardy. It offers good production at high elevation, and provides more complete ground cover than standard crested.

  • MX 86 Sheep Fescue (turf type) - A hardy, fine-leafed fescue that provides excellent ground cover but moderate forage production. More drought tolerant, best adapted for critical area soils. MX-86 is chosen for its performance in the following areas: persistence, ease of establishment, shade tolerance, general appearance and head and drought tolerance. It is used for home lawns, parks and golf course roughs.

  • Park Kentucky Blue - An improved variety of bluegrass.

  • Perennial Rye - Short lived perennial, two to three years. Quick soil stabilizer for mixes containing long-lived perennial.

  • Sheep Fescue - Very hardy, drought resistant bunchgrass. Makes excellent ground cover in areas of 12" or more of precipitation. Used for ground stabilization on cuts, fills, etc., because it produces lots of roots in tope layer of soil. Tolerates shade and soil acidity, so it has a use in forest and foothill regions. It is a short grass.

  • White Dutch Clover - A good clover for cloudy moist climates. Intermediate in size with foliage made up of leaves and leaf stems. Not tolerant to alkaline soils.

  • Blue Flax Wildflower - Short lived, but reseeds readily. Excellent wildlife forage and seed.

  • Wildflower Blend
